I enjoy bringing something special home from a vacation – a wood carving from the Dominican, hand- painted bowls from the Amalfi coast, pottery mugs from Vermont, sea shells from Florida, a vase from Spain. These special things are in my home as an everyday reminder of the places that are special to us.

But, it’s fun to take these special things to the next level and truly find inspiration in them. Use the colors in the pottery from Italy as a theme for your kitchen. Think of the beach in the Dominican and use the blues of the water, the green from the palm trees when accessorizing your living room. Bringing in colors and textures that remind you of a special vacation is an element to making your house feel like a home. It personalizes your space.

Today, it’s even easier to get the colors of your favorite place in your home. Take your picture of the blue/green water from your tropical vacation and use one of the many color match apps that are available to get a paint color. I like to use Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap Visualizer app. It uses an entire picture and gives you a palette of different colors from which to work – so fun!  This is a picture I took on my phone on a walk one night on our beach.  Voila – instant design inspiration!
